9 Basic DPS (Damage Output) Optimization Concept in MMORPG


This article will go over common MMORPG concepts used to maximize your character damage output as a DPS.  These concepts are universal throughout any MMORPGs that you may encounter.  Damage out optimization is a very important concept because higher damage output will equal to higher experience gained from PVM as well as higher kill rate in PVP siutations.  Most MMORPG game systems will implement these concepts.  Make sure that you go over the applicable ideas in your gaming to make your life as a damage dealer more successful.


Introduction:

This article will go over common MMORPG concepts used to maximize your character damage output as aDPS.  These concepts are universal throughout any MMORPGs that you may encounter.  Damage out optimization is a very important concept because higher damage output will equal to higher experience gained from PVM as well as higher kill rate in PVP siutations.  Most MMORPG game systems will implement these concepts.  Make sure that you go over the applicable ideas in your gaming to make your life as a damage dealer more successful.

1. Base ASPD:

Some MMORPG's provide players with highly customizable characters with the freedom to alter stats.  In these games, the stats Agility or Dexterity often plays into the calculation of ASPD.  These game include the widely known RagnarokOnline and FlyFF. Higher base ASPD means that you will be able to deal more damage under less period of time.

You could also consider using stats or ASPD enhancement potions or equipments that you might possible use to further increase your base ASPD.

On a final note with ASPD, often times the spammable skills ASPD are also linked with base ASPD.  The higher your base ASPD, the faster you can spam your skills.

2. Skill Timing:

This section will talk about damage output concepts when it relates to timing.  The issues that deal with timing are...skill animation, defined casting time, cool down time, system bugs, and the ability to chain into other skills.  When trying to maximize your damage, you need to consider the combination that minimizes the time spent on these timings.

a. Skill Animation

Skills nowadays have great graphics and along comes with execution time that will cut into the time for you to deal more damage.

b. Defined Casting Time

Pick the skill that has the lowest casting time will ensure that you can repeat your casts multiple times.  In addition, there are many MMORPGs that have a setup in which the mobs can interrupt your skill cast.  Having a lower casting skill will prevent interruption.

c. Cool Down Time

Skills in recent MMORPGs have cool down times in which the higher level skills deal massive damage but they have high cool down times.  You should experiment with these high level skills along with the low cool down time skills to maximize your damage.  However, you typically would suffer a low DPS if you only depend on higher level skills that comes with high cool down time.

d. System Bugs

Sometimes there are simply bugs or system setups so that skills are hard to use or hard to make combo with.  You would have to make your judgement based on your experience with the game play.

3. Critical Attack:

Critical attack is a popular concept in most of the MMORPG.  When a player execute a critical attack, most of the games usually grant a damage of +50%, +100%, maximum damage range (if a player can deal a range of 100 to 500, then 500 damage will be dealt, or defense ignore.

To maximize your damage per second, you need to look into possible skills, equipments, or stats that can increase your critical attack.  Often times, these critical attack enhancements come with a cost of lower damage range.  However if you take into consideration of the damage bonus given by critical attack, it is worth a look to create a hybrid build.  It is often the case that 75% of maximum damage plus 25% critical attack build would achieve higher DPS over pure max damage build or pure critical attack build.

4. Equipment Consideration (Elements, Race, Bonuses):

Most games offer equipment customizations that will grant higher DPS against specific element, race of mobs.  You should gear your characters toward the mobs that you kill the most often in order to ensure maximum damage output over time.

5. Hidden or Not so Clear Game Mechanics:

Different games have different terminologies that weigh different stats differently.  You need to conduct research into different stats.  Sometimes when 1 of the stats meet certain threshold, additional attack power would be granted.  

For example, 9 strength points is +9 damage, but 10 strength points might be +20 damage with a bonus of 10 damage. You should take good note of these thresholds and make the decision to maximize your damage output.

6. Mob or Player Defenses:

When designing your character toward the highest DPS against certain mobs or players, you need to take into consideration of their defense.  There are many MMORPG that offer players skills or attacks to pass through enemy defense.  You could increase your DPS if you have knowledge of these skills and make good use of them.

7. AOE Effect:

Another important concept to consideration is the power in numbers.  By mobbing or grouping several monsters together and cast your AOE skills, you could achieve very high DPS with fairly low amount of MP used. 

There are several factors to consider when using AOE, such as mob density or your chance of death.  If mobs have low density, it might take lots of time to group them together and therefore lower your damage output.  On the other hand, if you cannot handle the group of mob and die instead, you would lose more of your leveling time.

8. Your own HP and MP

To achieve highest possible DPS, you also need to consider your status after every battle.  If you need to recover MP or HP after every battle, or maybe even die in midst of the battle, you do not have a good DPS build because the majority of your time is wasted on resting or moving back and forth from maps due to death.

9. Buffs

Buffs are special skills and bonuses that you could utilize to boost your damage in MMORPG's.  Below are some of the buffs that you receive as a player.

a. Passive Buff

Your character might have passive skills that provide consistent buffs to your overall attacks and skills.  Although this concept sounds great, however game company usually high limit this kind of buffs rendering useless in most MMORPG's.  In most cases you are better to save your skill points if applicable in other areas.

b. Self-Buff

This type of buff usually has a time frame where you can do more and faster damage.  You should take look at all the self-buffs available to you and consistent using them to achieve highest possible damage output.

c. Other Player Buff

This type of buff will be dependent on other players who is either nice or partying with you.  You can achieve higher DPS when you receive attack boosting buffs.

d. Other Buff (Nation Buff, Party Buff, etc)

In many of the new pvp-oriented games, game company offers pvp-ers additional buffs when they achieve certain criteria such as the master of the guild, having special relics in their nation, or simply being a special class at a specific time.  Educate yourself with what those special buffs and you can boost your DPS to another level.
